Straps on a reformer allow you to pull, lift or stretch your muscles into a certain position on an exercise. Straps give you the resistance you need to hold stability through your powerhouse, and move your arms and legs as needed into the right angles and lines to get benefits of an exercise.

Meet Roxana Emami 👋

Roxana has been an instructor at PCPC since 2013. Inspiring clients with her knowledge of exercises and how muscles work, Roxana brings joy to teaching that is felt throughout the studio. Additionally, Roxana is a certified massage therapist and yoga instructor.

The Magic Circle is a great apparatus to help train more muscles to fire during an exercise, to help keep you aligned, and to help improve an imbalance in your body. It’s tough though, it is best not to add it in too soon, or you will over-work bigger muscles and neglect the less used ones you need to build.

The Pull Up. This full body exercise allows the client to build a tremendous amount of upper body strength. Also, the position of the body horizontally allows the lower body and core to engage and work, making it a full body workout!

Pilates is about alignment. Your body has to be in alignment to get the most out of the exercise. That is the job of your instructor. Not only to teach and guide you through a workout, but also to continuously check your body and form to make sure you get the most out of every exercise.

Emily found Pilates in 2009 after a knee injury and has never looked back. She finds Pilates to be a perfect blend of discipline, strength, and graceful movement. Now, as a Senior Instructor, she's dedicated to sharing her passion and guiding others on their Pilates journey.

A lifelong exercise enthusiast, Patty enjoys all kinds of physical activity—walking, biking, hiking, skiing on snow or water, preferably with her husband and four kids! The grace, strength and balance that can be gained by the practice of Pilates is so meaningful to her, and she loves sharing Joseph Pilates' Contrology with her clients.

The mat is challenging because there are no straps or strings to help you connect your muscles. You have to be able to use isometric resistance and that is really hard to do without an understanding of what these exercises are for.

Identify your personal goals and let your instructor know goals you are hoping to achieve through your lessons. Even though Pilates is a system, if you tell your instructor specific goals they can curtail the workout to you.

Building full-body strength is what Pilates is all about. As clients get better, so do their exercises. Shaving is a wonderful exercise because you gain a tremendous amount of strength in the upper body while stabilizing the rest of your body.
